Dear Neenie,
It was great to receive the Pandora tape last week. I'm sure your
new meta-font will spread rapidly --- {\sl people will love it instantly!\/}
{\bf Bravo!}
When I installed Pandora at Stanford, I had to change a few file names
by putting the letters `{\tt pan}' in front: We now have
{\tt panaccent.mf}, {\tt pangreeku.mf}, {\tt panlowers.mf},
and {\tt panpunct.mf}, so that there's no conflict with the
Computer Modern files stored in the same area.
I also made a change that you might disagree with: I renamed the
fonts according to the convention Pierre Mackay has been lobbying
for (with the first two letters to identify the family). Since you
have made your fonts consistent with the layout and accent conventions
of {\tt cm}, I've used {\tt pn} in the same way. So I named the
seven fonts {\tt pnr10}, {\tt pnb10}, {\tt pnsl10}, {\tt pntt9},
{\tt pnss10}, {\tt pnssb10}, and {\tt pnssi10}. At the beginning of
the parameter files I added a new line so that those files look
like this (just after the copyright notice):
$$\vbox{\halign{\tt#\hfil\cr
\% pnb10.mf\ \ \ Pandora Bold 10 point\cr
font\char`\_identifier:="PNB";\cr}}$$
Incidentally, I didn't call the font {\tt pnbx10} because it is
bold but not extended. I suppose {\tt pnbx10} could be the same,
with {\tt width\char`\#} increased by 5\%; but I haven't had time
to experiment. (The Computer Modern family has, similarly, both
{\tt cmb10} and {\tt cmbx10}.)
Neenie, this is terrific work! And I applaud your decision to put the
sources in the public domain while retaining the rights to the name.
I'm looking forward to working with you for a couple days this spring,
getting the glorious {\bf Meta-Marks} book into print.
\closing
Yours truly,
Donald E. Knuth
